Representative Laurie Schlegel
District 82
I am honored to serve as your State Representative for District 82. And it is my privilege to have been appointed Chairwoman of House Education for the 2024-2028 term. Prior to my appointment as Chair, I served on various committees, including Ways and Means, Health and Welfare, Labor and Industrial, and the Joint Committee on Capital Outlay. I am also proud to serve as the Vice-Chair of the Women's Caucus.
During my tenure, I have been dedicated to enacting legislation that addresses critical areas such as education, literacy, mental health, crime, public safety, lowering taxes and the protection of women and children. I believe that by focusing on these key areas, we can foster a stronger and safer community for all. Additionally, I have supported measures aimed at improving the business and tax environment in Louisiana, with the goal of creating more job opportunities for our citizens.
As a conservative Republican, my principles are rooted in the values of limited government, individual freedoms, and the rule of law. I am pro-life. These principles guide my decision-making process and inform the legislation I support.
I am a licensed professional counselor with Lighthouse Counseling Center in Old Jefferson, and I currently reside in Old Metairie. I have always believed in giving back to the community, which is why I have dedicated countless hours to volunteering over the years. Whether it was feeding the homeless at the New Orleans Mission or serving as a CASA Advocate for abused and neglected children. I have been committed to making a positive difference in the lives of those who need it most. I also interned with Catholic Counseling Services while pursuing my master's degree. Currently, I am proud to serve on the Advisory Council for Louisiana Women Lead and the Board of Directors for Metanoia, a non-profit organization focused on helping female youth victims of human trafficking.
My educational background includes a Master of Arts in Marriage & Family Counseling from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, where I achieved a 4.0 GPA. I also graduated magna cum laude from Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and summa cum laude from Dominican High School. My educational journey began at St. Catherine of Siena, where I attended grammar school. I believe education is the key to improving our state and believe in school choice. Every child should be given the opportunity to a quality education.
Outside of my professional life, I have been happily married to my high school sweetheart, Judge Scott U. Schlegel for close to 25 years. Together, we have an amazing son who brings us immeasurable joy.
I am dedicated to representing your interests and being accessible to you. Please feel free to reach out to my office and legislative aide, JP Risey, if you have any questions, concerns, or ideas that you would like to discuss. Together, we can continue to build a stronger, safer, and more prosperous community.
Thank you for entrusting me with the privilege of serving you,
Laurie Schlegel
